Tcl commands and text which must be entered verbatim are in Courier. Formal arguments to the commands are in slanted Courier. Optional arguments are enclosed in question marks. For example the simplified syntax for creating an image is: img create name The word img is a command added by the Huygens Compute Engine CE to the Tcl language , the word create is an option which must be entered verbatim to create an image. The word name can be substituted for the desired name of the new image. Actually, the img create command is much more complex. For instance, it allows you to specify the dimensions of the image in the form of an index vector.

O wrote the original material upon which Mr. Jones has built certainly qualifies Dr. O to be listed as a co-author. RLH : Yes maybe I phrased that wrong. I took the original with the intent that JO actively contributed to this version and that it wasn't just his original material.

But yes, he would be co-author. SYStems : The link is dead now! Is the book being cancelled, anyway, a new book should wait for version 8. Please cut the authors at least some slack! RLH : pffft, are you kidding me?!

I will be downloading this book. DKF : Correction, preparatory work on this book started when 8. Getting the contracts for the team of people who did the second edition was a big job, and nobody was working on it full-time anyway.

KJ : I was soooo tempted to add at least an appendix on some of the new 8. But we were already so late bringing this book to print that my publisher would have shown up on my doorstep and strangled me -- and my editor would have helped dispose of the body -- if I had tried to do it. RLH : O'Reilly just updated my safari subscription with the released version.

KJ Well, I plan to be there. AMG : I just ordered a copy! I'm so excited RLH : Send errata to the webmaster of the book site address above. An errata page is coming. LV I've been unsuccessful in finding one so far. The pearson web site owners of Addison-Wesley only have a table of contents displayed on the student page for ordering the book. AMG : Maybe we should start one here on the Wiki, then relocate it later if a more appropriate home is discovered or becomes available.

LV If you would like to start a section, that would be fine.

Hopefully there is a mechanism for reporting these items to the author, because otherwise the information won't be easy for them to track. I know I visited the official book site, mentioned above, and found a few links that didn't seem to be working the day I stopped in.

I'm going to try some other time when I have more time to play with it. RLH : Go to the book website listed at the top of this page and email the webmaster. That is the way to do it at the moment. The "webmaster" is Ken and he will gladly take your errata and he told me a page for just such a thing will be up soon.

AMG : I sent an email on the 18th of October but have not yet received a response. Fabricio Rocha - 13 Mar - Three months after ordering it at site.

Great book, greatly complements the man pages. But there are some evident bugs in some code listings. I don't want to offend anybody, but this discussion about an errata which is never created -- here or in the official site -- surprised me badly a lot. Ships from and sold by site. If you are looking to learn TclTk from scratch or want a great TclTk reference book, don't start here read Brent Welch's book. But why learn TclTk? Tcl is the Zen of computer languages easy to get started, impossible to totally master. The abstraction level is very much like the human mind e.

Tcl can be embedded into or run on top of other languages or apps saves a lot of programming time. One complaint I've heard about Tcl is it's slow for some purposes, but because Tcl is built on C there's always the option of using C code or Java, whatever where it's needed. Almost always there's a faster solution in Tcl when speed is an issue e.

Tk is the graphical side of the TclTk team and can be used with other languages as a graphics builder. However, if you wanna' use a language that would be great for running a starship, give Tcl a try. Paperback Verified download. I never had access to a copy of the original book from Professor Ousterhout, so I can't make comparisons like many of the reviews here, but I must say I am very much satisfied witht this book since I bought it some two years ago.

It will show you the tools and how to use them, without telling you how to build a cabinet. It is more like a complement to the Tcl'ers Wiki and the commands reference pages -- and it's a highly useful one, with a lot of examples and a simple language which can make you understand what you can not figure from the deep and sometimes confusing "man pages".

There is a whole section for those who want to use Tcl with C applications, which is not of my interest for now but may be pretty useful as a start for people who thinks that it is something much easier to do with Python or Lua. I bought this book to learn how to use and intergrate Tcl into a Windows application. It was quite helpful. There are many examples and practical discussions for dealing with Tcl. Well worth the cost of this eBook.

BOOK Tcl and the Tk Toolkit (2nd Edition)

At least in Kindle for the PC, all of the sample code is in the form of pictures, therefore, no copy and paste. The regular text in the book is selectable and copyable, though it's the sample code that I wanted.

I knocked it down a star for that.

I have several TCL books but this one has the best descriptions. The second edition is an improvement on the first edition, it seems better organized. One person found this helpful. Great Tcl. Tk book in the market.

Covers a lot of topics in a single book. This book has been well worth the cost. I have had to recently use TCL at work to support a new product company that we downloadd. I was able to get up to speed within a week and start producing results. Well explained material!
