Modern Algebra Book

The purpose of this book is to provide a concise yet detailed account of fundamental concepts in modern algebra. The target audience for this book is first-year. There's always the classic Abstract Algebra by Dummit and Foote. Section II of the text gives a nice treatment of ring theory, certainly providing. Beginning with algebraic structures in general, the author covers natural numbers, rings Mathematics Books | Math Books; /; Algebra Books; /; Modern Algebra.

This standard text, written for junior and senior undergraduates, is unusual in that its presentation is accessible enough for the beginner, yet its thoroughness and mathematical rigor provide the more advanced student with an exceptionally comprehensive treatment of every aspect of modern algebra. It especially lends itself to use by beginning graduate students unprepared in modern algebra. The presentation opens with a study of algebraic structures in general; the first part then carries the development from natural numbers through rings and fields, vector spaces, and polynomials. The second part originally published as a separate volume is made up of five chapters on the real and complex number fields, algebraic extensions of fields, linear operations, inner product spaces, and the axiom of choice. For the benefit of the beginner who can best absorb the principles of algebra by solving problems, the author has provided over carefully selected exercises.

Abstract Algebra: Structures and Applications

Examples, exercises, investigative projects, and entire sections illustrate how abstract algebra is applied to areas of science and other branches of mathematics. Classification Theorems Nilpotent Groups. Stephen Lovett is an associate professor of mathematics at Wheaton College.

He earned a PhD from Northeastern University. His research interests include commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, cryptography, and discrete dynamical systems.

No doubt, this text is a highly welcome addition to the already existing plethora of primers on abstract algebra in the mathematical literature. The topic coverage is very extensive for an undergraduate text … The author does an excellent job of balancing theory with applications. CPD consists of any educational activity which helps to maintain and develop knowledge, problem-solving, and technical skills with the aim to provide better health care through higher standards.

It could be through conference attendance, group discussion or directed reading to name just a few examples. Modern Algebra

Also, many modern books separate "linear algebra" from "abstract algebra", whereas this book takes a more integrated approach. I find it exceptionally clear and easy to read.

Many of the subjects are made particularly easy; there is a strong concrete flavour to the text. The authors provide good motivation for the material.

I think this book would make excellent reading material Linear Algebra: A Modern Introduction. Poole has done an excellent job of organization.

He clearly delineates between the "theory" and the "applications". This was helpful for me as I just needed to brush up on a few techniques. So, the clear demarcation made it easy for me to quickly read the relevant "theory" pages without drawn out examples of the applications. He still provide examples, but they are more generic in nature. For example, in the "theory" sections he demonstrates how to calculate the projection of a vector v onto a u.

In the "applications" section, he'll show you how to use reduced row echelon form to solve a Leontief input-output model in economics or how linear algebra is used in coding theory. The book is a "quick read" if you are not doing the end-of-section exercises. The exercises and application sections will clearly elongate the material, but with added depth, of course. Introduction to Modern Algebra and Matrix Theory: Second Edition Dover Books on Mathematics. First, a preamble regarding the book's contents--as taken from the review for the Mathematical Association of America: No Calculus to be found, yet, a good dose of mathematical maturity is presupposed in order that a student will benefit most from its contents.

We begin elementary enough: Points,Lines, Planes, thence to hyper-planes. Linear equations this, the first chapter given ample discussion surrounding interplay of geometry and algebra.

Abstract Algebra: Theory and Applications (A Free Textbook)

Note well the discussion: Chapter One paves the way for the remainder of the text. Concrete and Abstract always intertwined in seamless fashion.

The first chapter, of some Fifty pages, contains twenty or more Theorems and their respective proofs. Throw in the Exercises which accompany each section, many diagrams as accompaniment, and and one views dense thicket. Modern Computer Algebra. Only 13 left in stock more on the way.

Emmy Noether: The Mother of Modern Algebra. Only 4 left in stock more on the way. This is a fictionalized account of the life of Emy Noether, one of the most famous and influential women mathematicians of all time. It focuses very much on Noether, rather than her mathematics, but it does portray the mathematical environment in which she worked.

It is a nice book and the author's affection for Noether shines through clearly. It is well researched and written in a very pleasant style. These headings and subheadings lead themselves naturally to how an instructor might parse the course material into regular lectures, but, dependent of the amount of detail desired by the instructor, these subsections do not often produce minute lectures.

The textbook's preface includes a dependency chart to help an instructor decide on the order of topics if time restricts complete coverage of the topics.

The textbook could be easily adapted for a two semester sequence with the first semester covering groups and the second covering rings and fields or a single semester course which introduces both groups and rings while skipping the more advanced topics. Some chapters include a section of "Additional Exercises" which include exercises about topic not covered in the textbook but adjacent to the topics introduced.

Although these sections are prefaced by some explanation of the exploratory topic, rarely are these topics thorough explained which might leave student grossly confused and require the instructor to supplement the textbook on any exercises assigned from here.

Each chapter is concluded with a historical note, exercises for students, and references and suggested readings.

Additionally, each chapter includes a section about programming in Sage relevant to the chapter contents with accompanying exercise, but this section is only available in the online version, not the downloadable or print versions. The first chapters review prerequisite materials including set theory and integers, which can be skipped by those students with a sufficient background without any loss. This book takes a "group-first" approach to introductory abstract algebra with rings, fields, vector spaces, and Boolean algebras introduced later.

Throughout the textbook, in addition to the examples and theory, there are several practical applications of abstract algebra with a particular emphasis on computer science, such as cryptography and coding theory. Interface rating: 5 This textbook was authored using PreTeXt, which designed for typesetting mathematical documents and allow them to be converted into multiple formats.

This textbook is available in an online, downloadable pdf, and print version. All three versions have solid format, especially in regard to the mathematical typesetting and graphics. The online version is available in both English and Spanish, where the interface and readability are equally of high quality.

Grammatical Errors rating: 5 The textbook appears to be absent of regular grammatical or mathematical errors, although a few might be present. The few errors which still might exist can be reported to the author via email who appears to be very welcoming to suggestions or corrections from others.
