So, do you believe someone can read your mind? I address the whole audience, microphone in hand. They wait for my answer. Gentle laughter. Before I start I have to ask a question, I say, scanning the audience. Over there. Say your name out loud.

The man answers, John. You are correct, I say. He laughs good-naturedly, and the rest of the audience follows suit. John looks interested, his gray eyes intelligent. I keep the board to myself for now.

Mind Reader: Unlocking the Secrets and Powers of a Mentalist

So, if I were to ask you to say out loud a two-digit number, what would it be? All eyes in the audience turn to John now. Right away, he says, Twenty-four. I hear someone scream Oh my god in a distant row.

Beside me, John is laughing with surprise, and the audience is impressed. Thank you, John. Next time say sixty-two, okay? I head back to the middle of the stage, hold out my arms in welcome. So, good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Lior Suchard and I deal with something very, very rare.

I am a mind reader. This means that in the next few minutes you are going to experience a supernatural, entertaining adventure that will explore the great abilities of the human mind: You will not see sleight of hand here. In fact, if you see sleight of hand—then it means that it was not sleight of hand.

Everyone laughs. I smile and laugh lightly along with the audience. They are warmed up and ready to have fun. Gentle laughter ripples across the audience. Some people are leaning forward toward the stage, expectant.

Others relax in their chairs. I scan their faces, sensing their energy. They are all engaged. So, everyone, take a deep breath. The music starts up, energetic and upbeat. I stride down from the stage and move among the audience, smiling, looking from left to right. A gray-haired man looks confident, while the woman in the next seat hides behind him.

At the end of another row, I pause.

People are laughing, smiling. One woman seems nervous but she smiles anyway. The woman next to her has lots of dark hair and looks eager. Hmmm, I say. Shirley, please join me on the stage! Give a big hand to Shirley. All the women in her row clap like crazy, especially the one who looked nervous. I follow Shirley back onto the stage, soaking up all the applause as I go.

We stand side by side. I'm sure there will be ideas that stick with me the more often I go back to it. It's amazing how Lior can work his "magic"!

Mar 13, Thiago De Paula rated it did not like it. Misleading title. I've just read the first 50 pages and I'm still waiting for the part where he teaches me something. Hope to find at least some mind reading tips while hovering fastly through the pages.

Can't believe I got clickbaited even out of YouTube. Aug 31, Britt Malka rated it it was amazing. Lior Suchard writes in an entertaining way, which is not surprising because he focuses on entertainment in all that he does. Don't expect to learn how to become a mentalist by reading this book. He doesn't teach you how to read minds. It's still an interesting read that I enjoyed.

Jan 14, Anirudh Taneja rated it liked it. Lior shared his on-stage experiences he had with the audience. The experiences make you wonder for sure. He talks about how paying attention to details and meditation helps him concentrating. Some of the questions at the end really make your right brain working. Oct 28, Zeus Vll rated it did not like it. Oct 05, David rated it it was ok. Mostly entertaining. Apr 23, Anas Tonmoy rated it liked it Shelves: More like autobiography but will open the way to learn mind reading.

Jul 07, Lisa rated it really liked it Shelves: Once I visited a psychic who in the course of talking to me drew a picture of the circular "command center" prominent at my workplace. I was shocked, gushing, "Wow, that's where I work!! The reading as a whole was not too useful she advised that I read The Rules and avoid eating margarine , but I've had to take ESP more seriously since this experience. Lior Suchard's book is a quick read and a fun snapshot into the world of a professional "mentalist. The best part of the book describes how he developed his psychic and telekinetic talents and broke into the entertainment biz. I also enjoyed the transcriptions of his feats at various shows, though I can see how one might get annoyed by the relentless refrain "then everyone was amazed!

The "you can do it too" aspect of the book is anemic; a rehashing of ideas about mental functioning, memory, methods of persuasion, positive thinking, etc. And brainteasers, a few very dumb. There are some interesting concepts, though, like maybe the mentalist somehow influences the subject's "free" choice, and some useful intuition exercises, and a few references to check out there's a book about neurolinguistic programming I want to read now. Overall not a bad way to blow three hours or so.

Really 3. Feb 11, Prasanna Dommu rated it it was ok. Though an engaging read, this book doesn't offer insights into the working of human mind as the title claims.

Most of the time, the author is narrating his experiences and playing out scenes from his performances. Not worth your time. Jul 01, Matthew rated it it was ok. This book is okay, yeah. It's a lot of fun to think about the techniques used in reading nuanced body language. One of my favorite 'tricks' is when the illusionist asks someone to hide money in their right or left hand and then the illusionist guesses the correct hand.

Very fun. The author of this book does claim to have telekinetic and other supernatural abilities.

Personally, I prefer the claims of a performer like Derren Brown, who as far as I know performs all the same tricks without claiming This book is okay, yeah. Personally, I prefer the claims of a performer like Derren Brown, who as far as I know performs all the same tricks without claiming to have the power of telekinesis, or the use of chi.

If you are interested in magic tricks, mentalism, etc. This book encourages readers to think positively and believe in the power of the mind. Feb 06, Denise rated it did not like it Shelves: If this were only a biography, I would give it two or three stars.

This isn't just a biography and it is very silly. Respectable magicians and entertainers are honest about slight of hand and using tricks one of the reasons I adore Houdini. They challenge the audience to either sit back and have fun or figure it out. Suchard most certainly wants his audience to have fun but he isn't honest.

Of course there is a very good way for him to throw off skeptics and once and for all show that he i If this were only a biography, I would give it two or three stars. Of course there is a very good way for him to throw off skeptics and once and for all show that he is the real deal, he could take the million dollar challenge set up by James Randi.

Those who like Lior might enjoy this book as it talks about his shows. If someone is looking to learn the tricks of cold reading, props, etc. Lior Suchard is a very nice and entertaining person.

He is also funny and it comes out in his writing. The advertising of this book is a bit misleading, since it doesn't really teach you how to unlock the power of your mind. I thought there would be a little more "how-to" involved than there was. Lior kept joking that he'd have to kill all of his readers if he told us the secret of his powers suggesting a magician's trick That is disappointing.
