This book is mostly well written even though it deserves some well intended minor criticism. The book at times seemed a little fragmented, and had gaps of time that tended to erode the continuity. Sometimes I felt like I had lost the story and had to backtrack to resolve it.

On the positive side, I liked reading from the perspective of a journalist, a woman, who was an actual friend of Jimi's, but apparently not romantically involved. There is no taint of romanticism gone awry. Overall I enjoyed reading it even though it was painful to read the truth about Jimi's childhood and family life, and the way Jimi's personal life and musical career tail spun into the ground so soon after rocketing to the zenith of music stardom.

The reading of this book has provided me a much better understanding about how and why it all happened.

I have gained an insiders view of a man who was a brilliant artist and a resilient soul who somehow never escaped his own troubled existence. Jimi Hendrix has inspired everyone who has taken the time to listen to his music but his life story provides a different look at the man who is considered by many the greatest guitar player.

He was a passionate, thoughtful, humorous, gentle, and talented genius. He was also naive about business and allowed himself to be manipulated by the people who he trusted while he focused on his music.

I now think I understand why he would walk through Nashville in his early days, playing his electric guitar without and amp. He was just different but in a good way. Forget whatever you have been told about James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix in the past.

Open your mind, and read a truly unique and unbiased account of his life written by someone who was truly his friend.

Sharon Lawrence has no reason to tell anything but the true and factual account of Jimi Hendrix because she has absolutely nothing to lose, and nothing to gain. She refused to interview him for her job back in the day feeling that it would violate the boundaries of their deep yet platonic friendship. This true account is spellbinding and eye-opening! I would recommend it to any true fan of the blues, rock and roll or the top 30 guitar player's who have influenced music.

Of course Sharon Lawrence did an excellent job in presenting a big part of Jimi's life that I never knew about. I love Jimi's music, and I understand him so much more than I ever did after reading this book.

It also points out how awful record company executives can be to popular artists. I finally felt like I got the whole story.
