As renal transplantation is now 50 years old and the author of this book is an Italian, the association becomes obvious. Claudio Ponticelli has already published previously a book together with Barry Kahan and co-workers Principles and Practice of Renal Transplantation. Barry D. Kahan and Claudio Ponticelli. Martin Dunitz Ltd, , but in the book under inspection, he deals in large part only with the early and long-term complications of kidney transplantation. A small part of the book is dedicated to donor and acceptor selections. This makes the book not only worthwhile for the physician involved with the early care of the grafted patient, but is a useful reference for the nephrologist to whom the patient will eventually return for long-term care. Descriptions of the classic items are in full: delayed graft function and acute rejection, but also long-term issues such as chronic graft deterioration, immunosuppression-related complications, recurrent and de novo renal disease, infections, malignancy and a review on complications in all body parts: cardiovascular, abdominal, cutaneous, musculoskeletal, ocular, haematological including a chapter on thrombotic events and finally neurological complications. The chapters are well illustrated with tables and figures, enabling easy and fast understanding. The reference section at the end of each chapter contains articles almost exclusively from after the year , all coming from high-quality journals.
