I found Fred's website and book by accident one day when I was looking at speaking resources. I am very thankful that I did. His book is easy to read and is full of real-world help. This book really did two things for me it refreshed and re-enforced those things I do and taught me other skills that I did not have.
Fred's Mind Mapping process fascinated me and I am still trying to get better at using it. Thank you Fred for a book that can and will help not just one that throws out theories.
This is a well-organized book that will be a big help to not only beginning or inexperienced speakers but there are also tons of excellent tips for accomplished speakers who are trying to make continuous improvements in their speeches and presentations. Fred has a very pragmatic style that communicates directly and provides a written form of speech coaching that will help anyone learn to be a better speaker.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to make improvements in their speaking ability. Paperback Verified download.
I teach public speaking at a small private college. I wanted to teach the subject more as a practical endeavor as opposed to an academic one. I wanted the students to get used to doing presentations they are most likely to be expected to do in their chosen professions teachers, businessmen, law enforcement officers, etc. I wanted a book that was conducive to teaching these practical skills, along with real-world advice for overcoming anxieties and obstacles associated with public speaking.
I reviewed several books before settling on this one. This book was easily devoured by the students. It was insightful with good advice, yet did not have the boring flavor of an academic text. It contained humorous anecdotes and personal illustrations the students could relate to. Thus, they enjoyed reading it and by reading it were able to apply the lessons it taught.
I am using this book again for my next term of public speaking classes. I think this book is applicable to many different settings. I find it very suitable for academic instruction but I also think it would be equally suitable in less formal settings i.
One person found this helpful. Having written a book on public speaking myself, this is a book I wish I had written! It is written in an easy, conversational style with every tip supported by specific examples from the author's careful observation or from his own speaking experiences.
Here are three of my favorite tips from the book: I was invited to speak to a group of people but it had been many many years since I spoke to a group of people for business.
I already owned his book No Sweat Elevator Speech and really enjoy the way he communicates using comfortable, everyday language. Fred does a great job going through the steps involved in creating a powerful presentation. Some of the ideas in the book are degrees away from what I always thought should be part of a presentation.
For example, Fred says that images are more powerful than bullet points in a power point presentation. No bullet points! It makes sense though. If there are words on the slide, people are busy reading them instead of looking at the speaker and hearing what the speaker is saying. Fred emphasizes the importance of practicing the speech. He says to record your voice and practice until you like the way you sound.
Also tape yourself phone cameras are fine and watch yourself. Fred says nonverbal communication trumps verbal. So we want to make sure our gestures and facial expressions all work together to reinforce our intended message. The book gives you all the tools you need to put together a great presentation. The practicing is on us. This book is amazing and powerful! I have required this book not only for my public speaking classes, but ALL of my classes where giving presentations is required.
If influencing others is a part of your role in life, this is the book for you. If you are a leader, communication is imperative to leadership; this is YOUR book!
Fred gives a lot of straight forward, usable advice. Not just "theory", but examples and "how to'.
I especially liked the discussion regarding keeping all aspects of a presentation "in Sync". Each part of your presentation should support and supplement the whole. Anything that is not in sync has the potential to confuse the listener. Fred provides key elements for crafting a phenomenal speech, and offers meaningful cautions about things to avoid.
I thought I was a good public speaker, but this little gem of a book helped me easily improve on what was pretty good in the first place. Easy to follow, Fred gets right to the point. If you want to kick up your presentations several notches, get this book now. I also recommend Fred's other book on designing an effective Elevator Speech.
