Jul 17, I love Famous Five.. Enid Blyton's books have received much literary criticism, indeed the attitudes displayed in many of the books can be considered as sexist and outdated. At the end of the fifties many librarians refused to stock books by Enid Blyton on the grounds that children would not read the great works of literature, this had the result that Enid Blyton sold even more books. All I can say is that as a child I really enjoyed reading her books.

I would say that due to Enid Blyton I went on to read many other authors.

Indeed at the end of the fifties many librarians refused to stock books by Enid Blyton on the grounds that children would not read the great works of literature, this had the result that Enid Blyton sold even more books. After a period of attacks from the press, Enid Blyton allegedly stated that criticism from the over 12's did not really count. For a number of years only a few Blyton fanatics collected her books and indeed the view of many dealers is that it was hard to sell Enid Blyton books to collectors.

The situation is now completely reversed with most first editions having risen dramatically in price and the early war time books in the popular series becoming extremely difficult to find.

This may be partly due to the fact that was the centenary of the Birth of Enid Blyton.
