Whether you can learn much from such high-level chess is debatable but certainly there are excellent notations and it is evident why Kasparov was world champ. Not just great chess, but dynamic, exciting chess. Playing over some of the games just leaves you in awe. It's expensive, but if you get it as a gift as I did, it's like a treasure. Some of you may do better to seek out cheaper versions of his games.

If you play chess, you can not ignore Kasparov and certainly the author has put a great deal of effort into this contribution. This book is a little loaded on the front end Games are annotated heavily sometimes after just about every move so that the games are often around 7 pages long. Lots of chess meat, right?

Garry Kasparov's Greatest Chess Games, Volume 2 (Gnv64)

Of course, great, but overwhelming to almost the point of uselessness. If I want a tree of analysis on how to handle the latest wrinkles of the Najdorf Sicilian then I'll download a book on the Najdorf Sicilian. All I need is a general idea or else it starts reading like Mr. I can suffer through heavy analysis at turning points of the game, but I feel the author needs to learn that less is more at times.

Also, he includes a few blitz and rapid games. As a wise man once noted, "he who analyzes blitz games is stupid.

Garry Kasparov's Greatest Chess Games volume 2: Igor Stohl: Books

I usually write a review at the end of reading a book, but was so completely exhausted after going through a few games I finally gave up the task, over the years its become a useful paperweight if nothing else. Regardless, I'll give it 3 stars for effort. Just too dry to find much enjoyment or glean anything of value. Without doubt, Garry Kasparov should be considered the greatest palyers of all times. Not only his ELO rating , the quality of games are all speaking for themselves.

Yes, Fischer in the period , I think his strength was on par with him. But only 3 years!! Kasparov dominated the chess world for 20 years. He accepted all the challeges from the old masters, like Karpove and Korchnoi, he defeated his comtemparies like Hubner, etc, and even the younger stars, except Kramnik, cannot give him much trouble.

I think the other player can stand with him was Lasker. Who before World War, dominted the chess world for 27 years and also never afraid any challanges to him!! The two volumes are must for all players, no matter what level your are!! Twenty years later he is still world number 1, and is an internationally renowned figure, famous even among the non-chess-playing public following high-profile events such as his matches against IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer, and the Kasparov vs.

Garry Kasparov's Greatest Chess Games - download books

It is one of this year's best books, and it could be a great help to Kasparov in preparation of his own works about his career. Very few writers on the game could do justice to such an important project but if you are familiar with his previous book for Gambit, Instructive Modern Chess Masterpieces , you will already appreciate the very high standard he works to. This new book follows the same highly successful formula as IMCM - the opening stage of each game is discussed thoroughly taking into account any new developments since the game was played, critical decisions in the middlegame are subjected to intense scrutiny and, when Kasparov's opponents do manage to survive to the endgame, Stohl gives clear insights into the approach and high-level technique that has made Kasparov the highest rated player for the past 20 years.

This is a terrific book, all the more so as it is published as a beautiful hardback. Most of Kasparov's games were subjected to close scrutiny both in Chess Informant and magazines around the world. Stohl, who had a regular monthly column in a Czech magazine for many years where he did detailed annotations has unquestionably made use of this material, synthesized it, and added to it.

The result is a tremendous book that should inspire chessplayers everywhere.
