If you've been looking for quick ways to lose weight , you've probably come across J. Virgin's The Virgin Diet, which suggests that you can lose seven pounds in seven days by dropping seven foods from your diet. Though the idea of losing so much weight in a week sounds uber-tempting, you've got to wonder if it's too good to be true.
In a nutshell, The Virgin Diet suggests cutting gluten , dairy , eggs, soy , corn, peanuts, sugar, and artificial sweeteners for three weeks. After three weeks, dieters slowly begin testing the foods one at a time and tracking their symptoms. Week four brings back soy , gluten returns in week five, followed by eggs in week six, and dairy in week seven.
Though reducing the number of refined carbohydrates you eat and nixing added sugar—as The Virgin Diet suggests—is definitely valid, avoiding foods like eggs, whole-grain bread, and yogurt can cut out important nutrients from your diet, says Apovian.
And whole grains are full of fiber to keep dieters feeling fuller longer, boosting your weight-loss results, she adds. It's also worth mentioning that losing seven pounds in seven days, as the diet advertises, doesn't follow the one to two pounds per week guideline most nutritionists recommend, says Ellen Albertson, R. The bottom line: These shakes should only be made at the time of consumption and will go bad if they are made well before they are consumed.
These bars are a balance of carbohydrates, proteins and, fats. They are not to be consumed if the expiration date has passed. There are two different flavored bars: They feature healthy, clean eating recipes. A number of protein shakes have also been featured on different websites with their nutritional values and the idea that they support fat burning processes while keeping the consumer energized.
The Breakfast Virgin Diet Shake is supposed to be inexpensive, easily made, delicious, fat burning and a way to provide sustained energy, as stated on Livestrong. Rather than eliminating the ingredients that The Virgin Diet asks you to abstain from, they should be combined with more whole grains, fruit, vegetables and lean protein to make up a better weight loss plan with enough nutrition to keep you going without feeling drained.
The Virgin Diet weight-reduction plan is a three-cycle plan that involves eliminating seven distinctly reactive high-FI ingredients, reports Health. You eliminate the top seven high-FI foods. You may lose up to seven pounds inside the first week on cycle 1.
You reintroduce your system every week to one of the four maximum reactive high-FI meals: You incorporate this plan into your lifestyle with exercise and lifestyle habits to achieve long-term health success. These dietary supplements include shakes, sprinkles, bars, chews and soft gels. For extra supplemental shakes, the dosage is a few shakes a day along with the previously endorsed food.
There are no set warnings for this diet, although the suggested elimination of foods may not suit everyone. Each person is different and has different dietary problems that cause the weight to stay on.
The reader needs to figure out the right foods to eliminate from their diet to achieve maximum results. It is not really a diet, but a lifestyle change. I have followed the eating plan for a year now, and went from lbs. My cholesterol went down 30 points.
Also, I have had chronic nausea with no known cause for many years and I have stopped taking my two anti-nausea medications completely. I feel and look great! Those 7 items are found in many items we eat each day. However, I have a friend that has successfully mastered this plan in her diet and she looks and feels great! Recommend reading, but it take a whole lot of willpower to follow.

GMO is not the same as hybridized. With GMO, plants are crossed with an unrelated plant so that they will grow with herbicides. For example, with animals, a salmon crossed with an eel is a GMO. This differs from a salmon selected because it grows faster — but is still a salmon.
I was thinking of trying the seven days to see if I am intolerant to any of these foods. How have you been eating Linda? Are you struggling to maintain some consistent meal options?
I am following the Virgin Diet now for over a week. I have lost over six lbs.
That means to me that one or more of the seven has a negative effect on my system. It is a more difficult diet to follow, I agree, since I love all food that puts weight on, but I have to decide which is more important to me, and I think being slimmer and feeling better wins out.
I am on day 25 now, feeling very good and lighter. No trouble for me to stay on this way of eating, but thinking I might add corn back for a while and see if it affects me any. I am not craving sugar or soft drinks, loving pain water now. Day 40 for me and I feel great, losing about 1 lb a week, energy still up also. Began walking again, something I had not felt like doing in about a yr.
I have added corn back into diet and no bad affects. Eggs will be next. I will not go back to gluten or sugar tho, finished with it except on special occasion. So glad I tried it! I lost 8 lbs.
I am also NOT experiencing any cravings ok…maybe just for ice cream! All I have to say is whether or not you believe in this diet or J. Virgin, just read the ingredients when shopping for food, You will be amazed at the amount of crap there is out there!
Thanks for any help. Kay, she gives menu suggestions and recipes.
Some of the inflammatory foods she has you avoid for three weeks, like gluten, can actually make it difficult to maintain weight. Therefore, if this is an issue for you, eliminating it could help you gain weight. You know Debbie works for her and her comments are total BS.
Why are you guys so hateful? You need to work on your problems. If JJ Virgin is wrong…we will find out…individually. This book was highly recommended to me. I was talking to this woman online in my food store when the subject of diets and health came up.
She said in 3 days, she felt the difference by eliminating the FI foods. This is no different than babies that are introduced 1 new food at a time to check for allergies. Adults have tried all these foods, so we reverse the process.
I just started this program today. Has anyone found a way to not cut out all 7 items and still do well, or is it important to stick exactly to the diet as written. I have arthritis and am hoping to reduce some inflammation.
I agree with Anita. The problem with soy had something to do with the way it is processed in your body. It supposedly can lead to thyroid problems.
The biggest thing against soy that she says is that the soy bean takes in all the pesticides around it which then enter your body. I saw it on her TV presentation. Soy is full of toxins and people are often allergic to it. Just switch to coconut milk and you will be fine. Perhaps later you can return to soy after your gut heals. I have a soy intolerance. It is very uncomfortable: Actually, it is very common to have a soy intolerance.
It is frustrating that soy is in so many foods nowadays. Julio, that is not what GMO stands for at all. It means that we have altered the food item so it is either bigger, makes more crops, or withstands insect attacks. If it were not for GMO, many of us would not be around. You clearly need an education on healthy living and GMOs…. We are one of the last countries to not ban it!!! Educate yourself before you open your mouth!!! No one knows what the long term effects are on human consumption of GMO foods, but that does not mean that we should consume them.
Lots of GMO plants have been grown for other reasons other than foods- Cotton production for example which was responsible for the eradication of the Boll Weevil - The issue that lots of organic farmers are having an issue with is pollination issues- since these organisms can contaminate other natural plants…this can be a real problem.
You have not given accurate information about the Virgin Diet. The 7 foods you drop from your diet are just to get started. It is not just a 21 day diet. After 21 days, you one by one add the foods back to see if you have reactions. The goal is to find out if your weight gain has been due to food intolerances.
